Juicing

Juicing 2025

Regrettably due to the bumper crop of apples this year we are unable to accept any apples for juicing for the foreseeable future as we have to process all of our own heavy crop.

We are able to offer juicing of your own apples.

This service is available during the summer and autumn as apples ripen. The minimum quantity needed is 20 Kg roughly a 26 litre tub trug full. We ask that the apples are clean but windfalls will be fine as long as they are not too muddy. All apples are washed thoroughly before juicing. The cost is £1.75 per bottle of juice processed.

If you have your own bottles these can be reused as long as they are clean, we do use new caps and the cost of this is £1.30 a bottle.

We also offer a juicing service for those who want to take the juice away for their own use or to make cider. This is available at £25 an hour for the use of the mill and press.

We now have a Hydropress which runs on water pressure and this is used in conjunction with the rack and cloth press.

So how does apple juicing work?

Let’s look at a step-by-step:

1. First, all apples supplied are pressed.

2. The apples are then put through the scratter, a machine designed specifically to grind your fruit to the perfect consistency for pressing.

3. This breaks them into small pieces, ready for pressing.

3. The apple pulp is then placed into the rack and cloth press.

4. Layers of pulp or “cheeses” are built up.

5. The screw press is then wound down, pressing the juice from the pulp.

6. Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is added to the juice to prevent oxidation.

7. The juice is then left to settle for 12 hours.

8. Next, the bottles are sterilised and filled with 750 ml of apple juice.

9. The tops are loosely screwed on and the bottles are pasteurised in a hot water bath at 70°C for 20 minutes

11. The bottle tops are tightened and the apple juice is allowed to cool before we hand it over to you for enjoying!
